Bored with God: How Parents, Youth Leaders, and Teachers Can Overcome Student Apathy
By Sean Dunn, InterVarsity, 2004, 0830832068, 105 pages
Sean
Dunn is founder and president of Champion Ministries, and
author of Velocity:
Moving to a Solid Faith.
Dunn has partnered in ministry with over forty
denominations, and 200,000 students and ministry
professionals.
In
the present North American youth ministry context, student
“boredom” can be a formidable foe in youth ministry.
Rather than offer “cool” events, activities, or
methods to generate immediate excitement, the author
addresses some of the root causes for this indifference.
Because of this thoughtful progression through the
issues confronting the student ministers and parents of the
current youth culture, Dunn’s work is informative, as a
commentary on youth trends. In addition, the text also
fulfills its role as a handbook for use in combating the
present climate of student lethargy.
Bored with God should
be in the library, and on the mind, of every youth ministry
professional, volunteer, and parent.

The Seven Checkpoints for Youth Leaders: Seven Principles Every Teenager Needs to Know
By
Andy Stanley & Stuart Hall, Howard Publishing, 2001, ISBN
#1-58229177-2, 151 Pages, Hard Cover
Just
as a car needs a checkup to keep it running properly, youth leaders need to
perform checkups to gage how well they are doing regarding turning youth into
committed mature Christians. The book
covers seven checkpoints: authentic faith, spiritual disciplines, moral
boundaries, healthy friendships, wise choices, ultimate authority, and others
first. The seven check points can be taught over and over in creative ways
by youth leaders so that the principles stick and become a part of students’
foundation. The back of each chapter includes a scripture verse that ties in
with the chapter’s theme, questions to facilitate lesson reflection and room
for writing down answers. In the
back of the book is an appendix which includes lesson menus for middle and high
school and sample lessons plans. This books is great for both youth
leaders and parents of teens. ORDER

The Seven Checkpoints Student Journal: Seven Principles Every Teenager Needs to Know
By
Andy Stanley & Stuart Hall, Howard Publishing, 2001, ISBN
#1-58229-178-0, 202 Pages, Paperback
This
devotional book for teens covers seven checkpoints: authentic faith,
spiritual disciplines, moral boundaries, healthy friendships, wise
choices, ultimate authority, and others first.
The book focuses on one check point per week with a daily lesson
covering a concept under that check point.
Each chapter begins with an illustration also found in
Stanley
and Hall’s Seven Check Points, Seven Principles Every Teenager Needs to
Know for youth group leaders.
The illustration introduces a dilemma for the reader to consider.
The daily lessons begin with a scripture verse related to that
topic and probing questions to help the reader think about what they have
just read. At the end of the daily lesson is a wrap up of the principle
being taught and following it more space for reflection. ORDER

Ministry to Youth in the New Millennium
By
Alvin Reid, Ph.D., M. Div., Kreigel, 0024, ISBN #08254-3632-X,
207 Pages, Paperback
By
the year 2006, the total population of teens will be the greatest in
American history. Millennials,
are optimistic, smart, motivated and interested in spiritual matters.
They are ready to take on adult responsibilities and they want biblical
substance. However, our
culture and the way many churches manage youth ministry, treats young
people as irresponsible and self-absorbed children who could not
possibly contribute anything of value. Rather than focusing entirely on
gimmicks such as music, drama and amusements, we should engage them in
authentic worship and serious discipleship.
Once we get youth through the doors, the message conveyed should
be biblical, well developed and applicable for young people. We’ve
got to change how we do youth ministry if we want Millenials to impact
on their world. . For instance, teaching young people to communicate with and meet
God through prayer is one of the most foundational ways to prepare them.
Expecting and allowing young people to serve in ministry
opportunities is another. Reid's
book gives concrete examples of how we can accomplish this.
